Society and women mental health. Have you thought about this duo?  Societal pressures and the label of perfectionism have made mental health a thing of concern for women. Globally, mental health day is celebrated on October 10. But the world does not acknowledge enough the fact that one gender, in particular, goes through a lot.

The US, presumably, represents the most open-minded and advanced society. And even in the US, gender bias and mental health are taking a toll on women.

Every 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced a mental health condition in the past year, such as depression or anxiety.

Societies and Gender Norms

It seems that women’s lives have been the focal point of society. No matter what, the problem and the solution both lie mostly with women.

Without giving a second thought, all the blame is put on them. In my society, if the couple is not blessed with kids, infertility is easily put on the woman. Can’t a man be infertile? The answer is to replace her with another wife as if she is a placeholder.

Pathetically, she is the heart of every gossip. Society expects women to talk, walk, wear and even think in a certain way. And that way is prescribed by our ‘society’s judgemental-brigades.’

Women Are Required To be Physically Attractive

Women Are Required To be Physically Attractive

Women have a lot on their plates: kids, home, career… And that is not enough. They are also supposed to pamper their grown-up kid-like husbands, and always look good!

Social pressure and high expectations magnified with social media portraying the standard of ‘how a woman should look,’ leads straight to a systematic inferiority complex among women.

According to research done by PEW, 71% say women face a lot of pressure to be physically attractive, and just 27% say the same for men.

Women Mental Healh Issues are Rising but any Actions?

From fujn platform, we would like to raise practical concerns that emotionally deteriorate women’s mental health. Undoubtedly, the judgemental and nagging society has problems for both genders, but women go through exceptionally harder treatments in every society.

Women Undergo Tough Societal Treatments- PEW Research

The flaunting social media life of others, the depiction of the flawless bodies, the stories and advice for being a perfect mother affect women’s mental health.

With so much societal expectation of perfectionism, gender disparity, and economic dependence, a woman becomes a victim of the imposter syndrome.  You start doubting your intelligence, a sense of intellectual fraudulence-a clear sign of distressing mental health.

Ironically, every society has something wrapped up for women in some shape or other.

In England, around one in five women has a common mental health problem such as depression, or self-harm.

The statistics are released thick and fast, but without pondering the reasons behind them. More importantly, what are the actions to change the course of things.

Enhancing Women’s Wellbeing

We tried to bring to light the women-related issues at a glance. But we know there is a lengthy list of nagging societal norms and toxic cultures that ruin the sanity of women. The improvement we seek cannot be achieved swiftly. It may take time to enhance women’s happiness and set them free from the shackles of noxious societal and cultural customs.

For that to happen, we need to voice our concerns NOW.

Woman, Speak Up!

Nevertheless, raising awareness and stimulating other women to think is the solution. As a woman, use all your means to speak against the ill practices, challenge the irrational, and raise awareness. Think hard and deep and make people hear your voice against gender stereotypes.

Mothers, you can be changemakers!

Mothers, make your boys learn to respect their choices, personal space and shoulder the burden. The responsibility is on you mothers of male children. For centuries, we, mothers, have been taking stern actions in raising good girls. Now, the change would only come if boys are taught the basic rules that women are their counterparts in society.

Sow the seeds of education

Education is great, but without awareness, learning from education is incomplete.

Education, awareness, and upbringing go hand in hand to bear the best fruits. Providing children with all three will change the mindset of societies.

Challenge the Status Quo

You cannot stop the wagging tongues. But can you stop responding to the normal and set new standards of society? Seeking the sanity of your mind is the killer strategy.  Just forget who thinks what. Stop running after perfectionism.

Be proud of what you are and what you do. However, do seek your mental peace. Perhaps, self-growth and personal development to achieve inner happiness are not harmful. You can challenge the typical norms by giving silent treatment to the other person making sexist jokes or comments to women.

Be less Harsh on You

The only person who can be the best for you is ‘YOU.’

Stop fantasizing about others’ lives and stressing out yourself to achieve what society values.  Be the perfect thin, not the curvy feminine body. Be the ideal married life. Before anyone else speaks up. It is you who needs to be less harsh with you.

The Bottomline

There is no standard of being perfect, and there is no man who is the best in the eyes of every human. So do not lose your sleep over fulfilling society’s expectations. For, the perfect woman is the one who is happy and relaxed

“The real perfection lies in how you tackle your imperfection and deal with it perfectly.”
